How this calculator works

The number of bricks in a wall comes down to how much wall area one brick covers once you include its mortar joint. A bigger joint or a bigger brick means fewer bricks per square foot — and the reverse is true for small bricks with thin joints.

bricks = (wall area − openings) ÷ ((brick length + joint) × (brick height + joint)) × (1 + waste %)

A few notes on the numbers above:

  • Openings: subtract the combined area of doors, windows, and any other gaps in the wall — they don't need bricks.
  • Waste allowance: 10% is a common default to cover cuts, breakage, and pattern offsets; increase it for complex layouts.
  • Mortar bags: this is a rough estimate based on bricks-per-bag, which varies by mix and joint thickness — check your product's coverage chart for anything beyond a rough budget.
